Thanks for commenting folks! The edge retention on the Slate seems good so far.. i sanded the bevel on various grits up to 600 after initial shaping with a file - i worked it at about 25-30 degrees...

I think that Slate can vary pretty widely as to it being crumbly or brittle etc. AFAIK most Slate in the Uk where i am would be from Wales or Cornwall and it's generally tough enough... water also...

Slate was used by the Aleut for early ulu, purportedly until the Russians introduced them to copper and other metal. Not that the Russians were good guys, though. In their pursuit of Sea Otter pelts...
